So i dont know if you've heard or not, but a few weeks ago a young girl was brutally gang raped and beaten on her way home from a home-coming party. The crime, heinous it may be, is not the shocking part. The shocking part is that is estimated that at least 20 of her peers, ages ranging from 15 to 21, stood idly by and watched this great ordeal take place, going so far as to take pictures and video recordings with there phones.
My mom was in a huge fit over this, and ranted non-stop for 2 days after reading about it on a online article. She was horrified at the thought that not only did this girl get raped, but people watched for more than 2 hours as it happened. I on the other hand wasn't as shocked at the lack of human compassion shown. While i don't condone what happened, I actually wasn't totally surprised that it did happen.2 boys who were identified as witnessing the rape stated," Yea, I could have have helped her. But I didnt know her so I had no obligation to." Now I know for a fact, I really dont go out on a limb for anyone I dont personally know. I've stood by and watched people get the shit beat outta them in fights, and never thought twice about calling for help or even trying to stop the fight. Hell, I've even watched a guy twice my height get attacked by a group of teens half my height, and all I did was laugh and point. But there is a line. A fight, I'd let that continue (to a point) but rape? Come on now. I dont get how you watch a girl get raped for 2 hours, cell phone in hand, and yet feel no moral obligation to help. I mean, there's wrong, there's fucked up, there's really fucked up and now there's this.
This was kind of an eye opener for me though, made me think back on all the times I've just watched when someone clearly needed help, and now I feel kinda down. Well if you read this, leave a comment. What you think about what happened, or if something similar has ever happened to you. Peace.
